EMDR

As an EMDRIA Certified Therapist, ™ I incorporate the principles of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) in working with a wide variety of clients. EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that helps you process unresolved memories of experiences that may be driving your present-day feelings of stress, anger, or disconnection.

Having had EMDR therapy myself, I found it very useful in addressing the way I reacted in certain situations. EMDR helped me, as it has helped many of my clients, in processing emotions and beliefs associated with difficult memories.

EMDR works by targeting troublesome memories and helping our brain process the memories in an adaptive way so that they stop hijacking our responses in situations today. The stressful memories need not be dramatic or obvious, a so-called big “T” trauma, such as a life-threatening attack. They may relate to one or more small “t” traumas and show up in subtle but impactful ways: irritability, conflict at home, a sense of overwhelm, or difficulty staying present despite the best of intentions. These patterns of behavior do not arise out of nowhere.

By accelerating the brain’s adaptive information processing system, EMDR helps a person effectively work through the underlying memories and beliefs that keep dysfunctional patterns of behavior in place, allowing the brain to store the memories in a way that they no longer run the show. EMDR sessions are structured, guided, and focused on meaningful results. Many clients report feeling clearer, calmer, and more capable—less stuck in reactive loops and more aligned with the person they want to be.
